The Storylines to Watch at UEFA EURO 2024
England is the oddsmakers’ favorite to win the title. Seeking redemption after losing on penalties to Italy in the EURO 2020 final, Gareth Southgate’s men look to charge back to the final behind the firepower of Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, and Marcus Rashford.
After being unceremoniously dumped from the Round of 16 by England in EURO 2020, host team Germany looks to reclaim their continental swagger. This may be the final EURO competition for two of the squad’s stalwarts, Thomas Müller and captain İlkay Gündoğan, so time is of the essence.
EURO 2024 is a prime opportunity for France and its cadre of young superstars to bring home more silverware. After a crushing loss in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final, Kylian Mbappé is playing at his highest level yet, with Les Bleus’ favorable group stage draw and a clear path to the final.
After the past season-plus spent in the relative obscurity of the Saudi Pro League, Cristiano Ronaldo is back on the European stage, leading Portugal with 10 goals during this year’s qualifiers. Portugal won EURO 2016 and once again have the talent to go all the way.
Group Stage Matches Not to Miss
June 14 in Munich: Germany v. Scotland
The opening match of UEFA EURO 2024 features the home side looking to make a statement. Germany kicks off against a Scottish side that earned their third-ever EURO spot after wins over Spain and Norway in the qualification rounds.
Suggested arrival airport: Munich International Airport (EDDM)
June 20 in Frankfurt: England v. Denmark
The Three Lions shouldn’t have much trouble advancing from the group stage with Serbia and Slovenia looking like easy pickings, but this match against Denmark could be a stumbling block. The Danes are always competitive, lead by Manchester United’s Rasmus Højlund, and are looking to avenge their loss to England in the semifinals of EURO 2020.
Suggested arrival airport: Frankfurt Airport (EDDF)
June 20 in Gelsenkirchen: Spain v. Italy
In another rematch of the EURO 2020 semis, Spain and Italy will meet at Arena AufSchalke, the home of local club FC Schalke 04 in the Rhineland city of Gelsenkirchen. Group B is a tough crowd with Croatia also in the mix, so the winner of this match will have a huge leg up heading into the knockout rounds.
Suggested arrival airport: Düsseldorf Airport (EDDL) is about 40 kilometers from the city. The RE2 and RE3 train lines have a 35-minute direct connection from there to Gelsenkirchen Central Station.
June 21 in Leipzig: France v. Netherlands
The first big test for France will come at the hands of the Orangemen, when the two sides meet in Leipzig. Liverpool standouts Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo make the Netherlands a fearsome squad and a dark horse for a deep run in the tournament.
Suggested arrival airport: Leipzig/Halle Airport (EDDP)
