Every spring, the same destinations receive an influx of partygoers during Spring Break. Panama City, South Padre Island, Tulum, and Cancun are great spots, but why not explore somewhere different this year?

San Juan, Puerto Rico
San Juan may not be blessed with many sandy beaches, but it does have one of the liveliest nightlife scenes in the entire Caribbean. Get a hotel in the old town and then prepare to dance to reggaeton and drink rum cocktails until the wee hours.
A few tips: get drinks at La Factoría. Dine on local yellowfin tuna at Verde Mesa. The locals’ favorite rum is not Bacardi, it’s Barrilito (and when in PR, there’s never a wrong time for a Medalla).
The best day trip from San Juan is hiking in El Yunque. Oh, and there are a few good beaches in the capital. Playa Ocean Park is a short rideshare away from the old town.
San Luis Obispo, California
The home of Caltech offers numerous ways to spend your Spring Break. It’s in California’s Central Coast wine region. Take 101 north to Paso Robles or head just south of town to Edna Valley — both areas have vineyards aplenty. There are lots of companies that arrange bicycling tours between them. Pack a sandwich from the High Street Market & Deli.
For some time on the water, there are two great nearby options. Avila Beach is known for its natural hot springs and lovely bike trails. Pismo Beach is popular with surfers and beach volleyball players. Back in town, end your day with pisco sours and ceviches at Mistura.
Tybee Island, Georgia
If you’re looking for a more laid-back beach vacation, fly to Savannah, Georgia and then head to the coast. Tourism to Tybee Island doesn’t really pick up until after Memorial Day, leaving you with ample space to enjoy miles of gorgeous sandy coastline.
You’ll find the shore packed with eclectic bars and restaurants and beach bonfires at night. If you’re there over St. Patrick’s Day, head back into Savannah for one of the largest Irish celebrations in the country.
Gulf Shores, Alabama
If you usually go to Panama City on Spring Break, Gulf Shores is a great choice to switch up your routine. Just west down the panhandle from Pensacola, the beaches there are better, and the weather is usually lovely. At night, the raucous beach party scene heats up.
The Flora-Bama Lounge is a legendary bar open until 3 am with live music every night. The Hangout is another local hotspot for games and music.
Lake Havasu City, Arizona
Okay, maybe Lake Havasu isn’t “under the radar” during Spring Break, but most folks don’t immediately think of Arizona for a week of fun on the water. Rent a cabana boat on Bridgewater Channel and you’ll be the life of the party.
When the sun goes down, you’ll have no trouble finding one of Havasu’s legendary clubs. Kokomo is a perennial favorite, with over 10,000 square feet of pools and dance floors.
