Arrive
The Riviera is a well-known tourist destination full of sun-baked beachy villages stretching from France into Italy. However, parts of this remote coastline remain difficult to access. Early in the season, there are fewer direct trains, and the roads are windy and full of tolls.
The nearest airport is Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (LFMN), one of France’s busiest. It’s the preferred arrival point for nearly all travelers to Monaco and is closer to many Italian Riviera towns than Genoa. Let us arrange ground transportation upon your arrival — Sanremo is still an hour’s drive away.
Room With a View
You’ll be drawn to the effortless charm of Miramare the Palace the moment you see its Art Nouveau facade. The hotel’s pool and patio spaces are angled out at the ocean with soft comfortable chairs begging you to recline.
Savor Sanremo
Sanremo is called the City of Flowers and is a joy to wander around. Its mild seaside climate and warm afternoons are perfect for afternoons spent exploring. Start with the Passeggiata dell’Imperatrice for a long seaside promenade overlooking beaches flanked by palm trees.
As you wander in Sanremo’s old town, known as La Pigna, take a walk up the hills to the Giardini Regina Elena. There, you have a bird’s eye view of old Sanremo and the gulf. Continue up the hill to Santuario della Madonna della Costa to see the exquisite marble interior of this 17th-century marvel.
Furthermore, the other iconic spot in town is the Casinò Sanremo. Built in the decadent early 20th century, come to play a few hands of chemin de fer and marvel at the construction of this local monument.
Tutti À Tavola
When staying on the seaside anywhere in Italy, the only responsible thing to do is eat all the fresh seafood you can find. Liguria is home to an expressive cuisine full of fish and bivalves, herbs and aromatics.
You’ll get a gastronomic tour of Liguria at longtime Sanremo favorite Paolo & Barbara. Their filled pastas are mandatory but be sure to start with a few selections of raw, smoked, and cured fish to get the full taste of the regional merroir.
We go to Ristorante Ipazia Cibi e Libri for Northern-style meat dishes. Their plates with veal, terrine, rabbit, and other game are delectable and native to the region. The wine list here is profoundly local.
