Marathon Route and Best Viewing Spots

runners handshakingWellesley (Mile 13): Students at Wellesley College have a yearly tradition called the Scream Tunnel. They line the course and cheer in fearsome numbers, offering a much-needed boost to the runners’ spirits before a challenging second half.

A full three miles of the course run through this charming town, so there are plenty of good viewing spots. Before you leave, browse the boutiques around Linden Square and have brunch at The Cottage.

Newton (Mile 20-21): At this point, runners face a staggering, meandering climb as Commonwealth Avenue rises to a crest outside Boston. The stretch is called Heartbreak Hill for its true test of endurance and it’s one of the best spots for viewers.

A few blocks off the racetrack, Newton Center is stuffed with bakeries. Go to SALT for fancy patisserie, Blackbird for donuts, or Bakey for babkas and savory burekas.

Kenmore Square (Mile 25): The area around Fenway Park is no stranger to sporting excitement. Runners here are coming up on their final mile and energy is huge for the final push.

While in the neighborhood, tours of the famous ballpark leave at the top of the hour daily. You can also catch a game: the Red Sox are in town April 19–24 for a series against the White Sox and Mariners.

The Hotel Commonwealth is a great choice for luxury lodging with plenty of rooms facing the course. After the race, head to Eastern Standard for steak tartare, roasted bone marrow, and whiskey drinks.Boston library on race route

The Finish Line (Mile 26): The most coveted, and crowded, spot for spectators is on Boylston Street near the Boston Public Library. Near the finish line, we recommend The Newberry, a glamorously restored hotel across from the Boston Public Garden. Their rooftop restaurant, Contessa, sits under a glass terrace overlooking the Back Bay.

While You’re in Boston

On the same day as Marathon Monday, Boston will celebrate Patriots’ Day 2025. There will be a Revolutionary-era parade at Lexington, battle reenactments, and celebrations at other historic sites.

Later that week, The Town and The City Festival (April 24–26) in Lowell, Massachusetts, has become an exciting date on the indie rock scene. Dozens of acts play in bars, restaurants, cafes, and event spaces all over Lowell.
