The grandest ball of the Viennese season is one of many winter delights in Austria
The true splendor of the Belle Époque — brought to life in the modern day. The Vienna State Opera house is transformed once a year for the season’s most sumptuous ball.
The Vienna Opera Ball takes place on Thursday, February 27. A tradition dating back to 1854, the ball features politicians and businessmen, scores of debutante couples, and jet-set ball goers. If you’ve managed to reserve a box or a table, you’ll need the proper transportation.

Have a Ball
The annual Wiener Opernball takes place on the Thursday preceding Ash Wednesday. The tradition dates back to the dance evenings held in Vienna’s palaces during the 18th century.
It has grown to become one of the most important society events in the middle of Europe. Its attendees range from true aristocrats and local notables to curious onlookers and the international jet-set.
The dances open with a formal polonaise and are followed by classic waltzes from Strauss, Lanner, and others. With men all in tails and women in long gowns, the event truly evokes the heights of the Hapsburg Empire.
A Magical Night
To begin your elegant evening in Vienna, you need a dinner that lives up to the grandeur of the ball. You’ll find one on the tasting menu at Silvio Nickol. Located at the grand Palais Coburg, the restaurant has two Michelin stars and over 60,000 bottles of wine. You’ll dine beneath a dramatic vaulted ceiling on a tasting menu full of daring techniques and surprising flavors.
Across the street from the Vienna State Opera house, you’ll find Hotel Sacher, and in it, Restaurant Rote Bar, where the rooms are decked in burgundy velvet and starchy white linens. It’s the perfect place for dessert and a nightcap — say their original Viennese Sacher-Torte and a glass of Austrian Eiswein?
Hit the Ice
