Arriving in Kona

Kona International Airport (PHKO) is the main airport on Hawaii’s Big Island, located just 7 miles from downtown Kailua-Kona. The IRONMAN Course

The IRONMAN World Championship in Kona is legendary for its route that takes advantage of Hawaii’s dramatic landscapes and unpredictable weather.

The swim course charts 2.4 miles of Kailua Bay. Athletes dive into the clear Pacific waters, where they must battle currents and waves while staying focused on the swim’s challenging out-and-back route.

After the swim, athletes transition to the 112-mile bike ride. The route takes them north along the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway. They traverse lava fields and deal with brutal crosswinds during long stretches of exposed highway.

This same stretch is where athletes hit the pavement for the 26.2-mile marathon, starting and ending in downtown Kona. Winding up and down the coastal road, it’s where the heat and humidity truly test the limits of endurance.

Best Spectator Spots

For the best views of the action, here are the key locations, all located near each other in downtown Kona.

Kailua Pier is where the swim begins and ends, making it one of the most exciting places to catch the race. Early risers can watch the athletes prepare for the swim and cheer them on as they exit the water.

Ali’i Drive is a popular spot to see the athletes during the run portion of the race, especially near the start and finish. It’s lined with restaurants and cafes, making it easy to grab a drink or meal while staying close to the action.

The intersection of Palani Road and Kuakini Highway is a favorite for race fans. Athletes pass through here multiple times during both the bike and run portions.

Explore the Big Island

While the race is the main event, Kona and the Big Island are filled with incredible sights and experiences. Volcanoes National Park is a must-visit for any visitor to the Big Island. Home to the active Kīlauea volcano, the park offers hiking trails, lava fields, and incredible views of volcanic craters.

Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park is on the shore south of Kona. This ancient Hawaiian site offers a glimpse into the island’s history, with temples and royal grounds set against the backdrop of the Pacific.

The leeward shore is famous for coffee, and you can tour one of the island’s many coffee farms. And for the best and most authentic Hawaiian food on the island, visit the lauded Kaaloa’s Super J’s. Get the lau lau — chicken or pork steamed in taro leaves.
